BRISBANE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 12, 1999--

Availability of Jukebox Systems, Extensive Software Support
Show That New Removable Storage Standard Is Ready for Prime Time

Hitachi America, Ltd., a subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., (NYSE:HIT), today said that this week's AIIM '99 trade exhibition marks an important step in the adoption of DVD -RAM based storage systems for corporate information management applications.
Attendees at the conference, one of the largest annual events for managers seeking document management solutions, will get a close look at jukebox and tower storage solutions and dozens of software packages that now offer full support for DVD -RAM drives and media.

Hitachi, which is represented at the show in the Maxell Corporation of America booth (No. 4123), noted that Cygnet Storage Solutions (booth 3410) and Plasmon IDE, Inc. (booth 3308) will both be exhibiting mid- to high-capacity storage systems that integrate Hitachi's GF-1050 DVD -RAM drives. Leading providers of document imaging, storage management, archiving and back-up software solutions that utilize the superior value and performance of the rewritable DVD standard will also be on hand.

"Imaging and information managers can implement DVD -RAM solutions today, and realize immediate benefits in data accessibility by using a rewritable optical standard backed by industry leading manufacturers of personal computer data storage products," said Werner Glinka, senior director, marketing, optical and multimedia products, at Hitachi America, Ltd. " DVD -RAM drives offer great performance compared to all previous generations of rewritable optical storage. And, the low cost per Mbyte of DVD -RAM storage provides superior value compared to any other random access storage medium."

Hitachi DVD -RAM drives implement the rewritable, removable media standard developed by the DVD Forum. The standard for DVD -RAM media was developed specifically for data storage applications, with a storage capacity of 2.6 Gigabyte (GB) on each surface, support for more than 100,000 rewrite cycles, and high reliability achieved with advanced error correction features.

The Hitachi GF-1050 DVD -RAM drive is a SCSI-2 interface device that reads and writes to DVD -RAM media, and can read data recorded on any currently available 120 cm optical disc. This includes all popular DVD and CD formats including DVD -R, CD-ROM, CD-R/RW, and Video CD. The drive has a maximum access speed of 210 ms for DVD -RAM media and a data transfer rate of 1.38MB/s.

Systems On Display

Cygnet Storage will display two jukebox storage libraries at AIIM '99. The InfiniDVD incorporates as many as eight GF-1050 DVD -RAM drives and accommodates up to 500 single-sided bare media, providing maximum total capacity of 1.3 TeraBytes. The DVD 100 deskside library holds up to 100 media, for total capacity of 260 GB.
Hitachi DVD -RAM drives are also installed in Plasmon's D-Series DVD -RAM storage libraries, which provide high-capacity rewritable storage capabilities and secure network access to 100's of DVD -RAM discs. Plasmon will also demonstrate its recently announced AutoTower, a DVD -RAM library designed for network attached storage applications.

In addition to storage hardware and SCSI-2 adapters, the industry's leading providers of jukebox management software, including Smart Storage, iXOS and Tracer, have verified the compatibility of their products with Hitachi's DVD -RAM drives. The drives also have been verified for operation with the leading device driver, data backup, MPEG encoder/decoder hardware and software, and multimedia applications.
