American Power Conversion Introduces First Power Protection Management Solution for Microsoft Windows 2000 Beta 3

WEST KINGSTON, R.I., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- American Power Conversion (APC) today unveiled the industry's first uninterruptible power supply (UPS) management software solution designed to enhance the reliability and availability of the soon to be released Microsoft Windows 2000 beta 3 operating system. APC has conducted initial testing of its PowerChute(R) plus 5.2 beta software in Microsoft's labs to ensure compatibility with Windows 2000 beta 3, Microsoft's final beta version of its new operating system. "APC's special version of PowerChute plus UPS management software reiterates

Microsoft and APC's long-term commitment to reliability in today's enterprise computing environments, where uninterrupted systems availability 24 hours a day, 7 days a week is essential," said Kevin Brown, manager, software marketing at APC. "These business-critical systems cannot achieve continuous availability without reliable protection from common power disturbances. Today's announcement illustrates APC's commitment to delivering innovative and convenient UPS management solutions that improve our customers' productivity."

According to Contingency Planning, power problems are the leading cause of data loss. A study by IBM has shown that a typical computer is subject to more than 120 power problems per month. Power interruptions or outages can cause problems including: keyboard lockups, corrupted data, and lost Internet connections, as well as hardware degradation and system crashes resulting in complete data loss.

As Microsoft finalizes Windows 2000, APC will continue to enhance its power management offering to emphasize integration with the Windows 2000-based Microsoft Management Console and Active Directory. Active Directory is a multipurpose directory service that simplifies administration, making it easier for users to find resources throughout an enterprise network.

"Customers who require the highest levels of system availability need systems that provide integrated support for reliable power protection and management," said Mike Nash, director of Windows NT Server and infrastructure marketing at Microsoft Corp. "Microsoft and APC have been industry partners in systems availability for several years. We are very pleased to partner with APC to help increase the availability of Microsoft Windows 2000 beta 3."

APC and Microsoft's ongoing relationship has encompassed both software and hardware solutions. APC's PowerChute plus carries the BackOffice logo which ensures compatibility with Windows NT- and BackOffice-based applications and APC's hardware carries the Designed for Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows 98 logos. Additionally, APC was the only power protection vendor to be both a Microsoft Windows 98 Launch Gold and Windows 95 Launch Partner.

An English version of APC's PowerChute plus 5.2 beta will be available at the end of April as a free download from the software download section of APC's Web site at www.apcc.com.
