IBM to produce Philsar's wireless ICs using SiGe process

OTTAWA, Canada --Philsar Electronics Inc., developer of radio signal processors for wireless communication, today announced an agreement with IBM Corp. under which IBM will manufacture wireless communication ICs for Philsar using IBM's advanced silicon germanium (SiGe) technology. In addition, Philsar is licensing certain intellectual property (IP) to IBM.
"We look forward to incorporating IBM's SiGe technology into our development efforts," said Antoine Paquin, president and CEO of Philsar. "SiGe is ideally suited for Philsar's single-chip, low-power radio ICs."
SiGe offers high levels of integration, high-frequency performance, and low-power operation. Philsar plans to work with IBM to integrate SiGe technology into several of its radio signal processors where high performance and low power consumption are required, including products for emerging wireless networking applications.
"Philsar has some unique technology that complements our own cell library," said Michael Concannon, vice president of wireless communications products at IBM Microelectronics. "Philsar has proven leadership capabilities in radio frequency circuit integration technology which directly complement IBM's vision for this marketplace."
Philsar, a six-year-old company, has developed the radio signal processor architecture for software-configurable radios that adapt to multiple communication protocols. Last week, it announced a round of funding from venture partners and investors including Lucent Technologies (see April 5 story).
