Unlike Eisenhower and others, Carter was “qualified”, remember? It appears to me Keyes has everything he needs to construct a very effective presidential administration. His experience is quite relevant to the job, and he apparently has good ideas, brains and character. I understand your tendency to look only toward candidates who have had time in office, and in the past I have shared the tendency. I simply think it a grave error. We have too much reduced the presidency to an office wherein the primary responsibility is to ensure our nation's bathrooms have sufficient toiletries. Keyes likely has what it takes to find first rate people who can advise him on the sort of paper to put in the bathrooms. What only he can provide is the fundamental character and leadership ability I think a president simply must have to advance his agenda. It would be wonderful had Keyes experience in office, but this is not a prerequisite for the presidency. As much as anything the presidency requires brains and character, and it seems Keyes has both these qualities to an uncommon extent. He needs but one additional thing to make him worthy of the American presidency. He needs the majority of the vote.

Perhaps it appears he cannot now get the majority. But with Americans you never know. They are an unprincipled bunch, and this provides us a two edged sword. They possibly can be beguile toward principle. If anyone can do it, it would be Alan Keyes.
