Yeltsin Warns NATO
of World War

President Boris Yeltsin on Friday warned starkly of a world war over NATO's actions in Yugoslavia as others in Russia's top political ranks said that the Kremlin had discussed "re-targeting" its huge nuclear arsenal on alliance cities. The Kremlin quickly denied a claim by the communist speaker of parliament that Yeltsin had actually ordered the re-targeting. But the fact that such a discussion took place at all has shaken and surprised some in NATO capitals.

"I told NATO and Americans, Germans, that you should not push us towards military action." he said. "Otherwise, there will certainly be a European, if not a world war — which is unacceptable.

We are against it. We are against sending arms. Although they [Yugoslavia] are a little offended that we are refusing.

"We cannot permit that," Yeltsin said in the Kremlin, without specifying what action Russia might take.
