Fore is in the LAN space and not considered a competitor.

This doesn't sound to me like a LAN application:

From the press release:

The NBEN project is expected to be completed during the second half of 1999. The first phase of implementation totals 11 GigaPOPs, including Taiwan's major academic centers, research organizations and telecommunications units. The GigaPOPs use FORE Systems' ForeRunner® ASX(TM)-1000 ATM switches connected by STM-1 (155Mbps) broadband circuits from Chunghwa Telecom.
