They were ordered to do it by God (if you believe what the texts say). The same is true of things like lying, stealing, adultery and so forth. That was my basis for questioning the Bible as a reasonable, no less an immutable source of morality.

I don't think Christians are allowed to [kill non-Chose people with impunity].

You will have a hard time explaining such things as the Inquisition, the Crusades or the 30 Years' War. How about the war against the Gnostics? There are many more examples, but these will do for a start.

I am sorry if I offended you. That was not my purpose. Nor was my purpose to be critical of Christianity or any other religion for that matter. It was my purpose, however, to challenge the commonly held notion shared many believers that their moral stance is correct and immutable and we ought to use their holy books as a basis for morality.
