GMV Network Delivers the Smashing Pumpkins Live Using GMV ConferenceServer Technology
CHICAGO (April 12) BUSINESS WIRE -April 12, 1999--
GMV Network Aligns with Affiliates to Make Event Possible
GMV Network (www.gmvnetwork.com), the premier standards-based streaming technology company, announced today that the first concert of The Smashing Pumpkins new tour held on Saturday, April 10, from St. Andrews Hall in Detroit, was successfully broadcast live over the Internet to nearly 100,000 viewers.
Using GMV's ConferenceServer(tm) technology to deliver the Java-based video and audio streams, the company said the broadcast was made possible with the help of several webcast affiliates that created a 'network of networks' across the World Wide Web. The company said the participation of the network affiliates was extremely important for delivering high quality of service over the public Internet, particularly for an event of this magnitude.
The technology developed by GMV Network eliminated the need for software plug-ins, enabling The Smashing Pumpkins fans to view the event with any Java-enabled browser. GMV Network said The Smashing Pumpkins' Official website, (www.thesmashingpumpkins.com), received more than a quarter million hits during the 20-minute event.
"NaviNet is happy to be a participant in using exciting new technology to bring the best quality and most compelling content to the end users of our services," said Jim Winkleman, chief technology officer and vice president of Engineering for NaviNet, Inc., a CMGi company (NASDAQ: CMGI).
"This Internet webcast technology is highly scalable, and because it's Java-based, is widely accessible," said Vinay Goel, vice president, Internet visual communications unit for VTEL Corporation (NASDAQ: VTEL). "The Smashing Pumpkins webcast by GMV Network validates the power of this technology, which enables high-quality video delivery over the public Internet and private networks."
"The quality of the audio and video rocked. The fact that this was streamed in Java is outstanding," said Josh Kaplan, president and CEO of San Francisco based Intouch Group Inc.(www.intouchgroup.com), an interactive music solutions company.
