I have a real-world question for the embedded systems people on the thread. My closest friend is a meter-reader for a utility company in the Bay Area. I need to find out what the future of embedded meter-reading is and how quickly it will come into play and eliminate those jobs. This situation is a close parallel to the vending machine scenario; obviously it requires communications and a network, but beyond that?
