I think trust is required in the following way. Let's paint pictures of the two extremes of argument. On the one side is the earnest conversation from which both parties emerge with new insights, a consensus ... refreshed, stimulated. On the other side is the situation where two parties, let us suppose with honest intent, become implacably opposed. More striking is the likely outcome that both parties will feel dishonored. This is the stuff of feud.

Every argument, discussion, beer chat ... contains both these elements in small scale, continually gaming out the next move. Trust is the motor that allows me to take the tiny impasses and place them in neutral escrow long enough to listen out the next layer of message. It is the benefit of the doubt. If another poster succeeds in using up the trust reservoir I disengage. Then any future post from that person I prejudicially hold to a tougher standard of content and style. It is not fair, but it is the monkey way.
