If the concern that music being downloaded from the internet will have a serious impact on CD sales is legitimate, how does one view the prospects of Software companies? Surely theirs is a very bleak future too.

Pretty much everything is or will yet be available on the internet some for free but much for a price. Sooner or later those who give it away will figure out a way to profit from it and it will become a business. There will always be new music and special music which will be only available to buy in the store or on the internet. The world is changing because of the internet yes...it is not coming to an end because of it! We might be selling something other than CDs 20 years from now as 8 tracks are now defunct but music not unlike software will always be bought somehow!
