Okay Sidney, here's what God promised Cain:

if anyone kills Cain, Cain shall be avenged seven-fold. Presumably this refers also to all of Cain's descendants. So who are these guys? We know that the moved somewhere east of Eden. And we know that the last descendant discussed prior to the flood was Lamech, and for some reason retribution increased to 77 fold. Where are they today?

Well, let's see: Lamech had a son named Noah, and the rest is history, no? Didn't God then lay waste to the entire world. So if we are all descendants of Cain it's not much of a promise.

But I must admit to great confusion here. Perhaps you can help me. Is Lamech of the Cain story the same Lamech who was Noah's father. I only ask this because in my Bible they seem to have two different fathers. One is named Mathuselah (grandfather of Noah) but a descendant of Seth. The other was Methushael, a descendant of Cain.

Oh well ...
