IAN- AUTOMATION AWARD EXCELLENCE APRIL 1999
Low-Cost, Single Solution Lets OEMs Easily Embed Networking Into Semi-Intelligent Devices
With Ethernet projected to reach all the way down to the lowest levels of the automation hierarchy, NETsilicon, Inc., Waltham, MA, has introduced the NET+ARM 5 & 10T, a new addition to the NET+ARM product family. The NET+ARM 5 & 10T is a 5 MIPs, 10BaseT Ethernet solution that lets OEMs easily embed networking into semi-intelligent devices by providing sufficient processing power and a complete networking solution at a new, lower cost of entry, claims the company.
NET+ARM is a standards-based networking system that offers a single product solution that, in conjunctionwith the physical interface and memory, encompasses all of the required hardware and software necessary to network-enable electrical devices. The integration of proven hardware and software helps OEMs speed time-to-market, cut unit costs, and simplify design when network-enabling their products. It combines the ARM® 7 32-bit RISC processor and NETsilicon's networking and web-enabling software, NET+WEB, which includes Internet protocols, HTTP and FTP client and server, web browser, interface with mail servers, and a host of drivers. NET+WEB interfaces with the pSOS+™ real-time operating system software from Integrated Systems, Inc.
According to Pete Peterson, president and CEO of NETsilicon, "The NET+ARM 5 & 10T brings technological innovations to Ethernet/Internet open networking. For developers of devices that require networking and Web management without high MIPs processing power or 100Base Ethernet connectivity, the product we will save time and give them a new price/performance entry point for the NET+ARM 32-bit RISC processor."
Peterson added, "Low-cost devices such as sensors, security devices, scales, data acquisition instruments, meters, etc can now benefit from the robustness of a 32-bit processor at the cost of 8- and 16-bit processors. When combined with the physical interface and memory, NET+ARM 5 & 10T is a complete networking package, with all the hardware and software necessary to achieve network connectivity. It also offers a migration path to our other NET+ARM products (12, 15 and 40 MIPs), so OEMs can shrink their existing designs or move up depending on their performance and materials cost requirements."
Simultaneously, NETsilicon, Inc. has introduced new features for the NET+ARM software utility toolkit and development environment. The software release incorporates new protocol for Domain Name Service (DNS) Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) version 1.0 and MIB 2. Customer-specific MIBs can also be supported. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) support for FLASH memory upgrades in addition to the existing ROM update utility, over the LAN, are included.
"The addition of SNMP and DNS to the existing NET+WEB utilities further expands the options for OEMs to provide intelligent devices," says Michael Romanies, NETsilicon vice president of marketing. "By continuing to integrate additional features and expanded software support, NETsilicon is expanding its commitment to provide a robust hardware and software solution.
