Does Compaq put AMD chips in commercial PCs???> Cirrus, it's reasonable to assume that Compaq isn't making much money on their low-priced retail segment, and never expected to in the first place. And anyway, the retail segment only makes up a small fraction of Compaq's total number of PC's shipped. It also makes up an even smaller fraction of Compaq's total revenue from PC's because of the lower margins. As for whether the channel was stuffed with AMD or Intel chips, we don't know. Either way, AMD's production problems could only have made things worse for Compaq who still wrestles with old problems like inventory. Also, you might want to take a look at the pie charts: zdnet.com to see that Compaq's retail marketshare has slipped between February 1998 and February 1999. This is definitely something that Compaq isn't admitting, perhaps because Pfeiffer is too busy blaming outside factors for Compaq's troubles. Tenchusatsu
