Once again, the Depository Trust Company (DTC) holds all shares that are held in street name for all brokerage firms. I get a weekly sheet showing the position of every firm that holds Xecom for their clients (the figure dtc gives may not be accurate as I am finding out). However, you at least get a minimum figure; then I go to the transfer agent and give the exact day that dtc gave its print out and now I have the number (approximate).
On 2/24/97, 102 firms said they own 5,825,581 (US fig.), transfer agent says 5,083,325 = <742,256 short US>. Canada is supposed to be long 300,068, but they only have 5000 long and 231,005 short which means Canada is 526,073 short. Add the two short positions together and you get 1,268,329 an increase of 194,716 from 2/18 - 2/24. I can tell you that the short is larger because I am trying to get stock out of two firms and they don't have enough to cover my position; maybe that is the delay!. Lanza |
