I think the big competitor here for G* will not be fiber, but geo sats ; if the ground terminal is fixed, geos will be much cheaper for this kind of service and, almost by definition most rural telephony users won't care much about latency. >>

Why do you think latency will not be an issue? I think once people get past the "talking dog" stage (what's special is that the dog talks, not what he says), latency will be a big issue.

I saw part of an interview today on Good Morning America where Charlie Gibson was talking with someone in the general neighborhood of Yugoslavia. I saw the man on the other end answer Charlie's question, pause (at which point Charlie would ask another question), and then continue talking, getting animated and waving his hands in the air until he heard Charlie's question interrupt him. It looked like there was about a 2 second lag. It was very disconcerting.
