Insider trading activity not all suspect

Insider selling in the Canadian technology sector appears to be on the rise....
....On this basis, Open Text and Research in Motion may be most at risk. Corel is one of the few companies to have experienced a substantial correction in share prices. Just before the release of poor quarterly earnings last month, several executives sold off large chunks of shares at the $6 level or better.

It is illegal for insiders to trade on undisclosed material information, so news of the selling brought protests from Corel shareholders.

This kind of behavior is nothing new for the company. Senior executives last year sold off millions of dollars worth of company shares just before a major plunge in share prices on bad news.

These actions attracted the attention of the OSC; in fact, it was reported in July that Corel chief Michael Cowpland was under investigation for possible insider trading violations....
