Frontier Communications Delivers Dedicated Internet Access Service to Carrier Customers
ROCHESTER, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 13, 1999--Frontier Communications today introduced the availability of dedicated Internet access service to the carrier marketplace.
In keeping with its strategy as a data market leader, Frontier is utilizing the unprecedented efficiency, reliability and transmission speeds afforded by the Internet Protocol (IP) portion of the Frontier Optronics Network(SM) to enhance its already robust wholesale data and voice portfolio. The IP backbone is already operating at speeds of OC-48 or 2.5 Gbps (Gigabits per second) and carrying high-speed traffic coast-to-coast. Once fully deployed, it will encompass 24 nodes with connectivity to 120 cities nationwide.
Frontier CarrierConnect(SM) provides direct connectivity to the Internet for carriers and resellers at DS-1, fractional and full DS-3 speeds. This service enables customers to offer Internet access, data virtual private networks, e-commerce, Web hosting, Voice over IP (VOIP) and more. Frontier's extensive private peering arrangements with Tier-1 IP networks and public peering arrangements at Metropolitan Area Exchanges (MAEs) and Network Access Points (NAPs), allow carrier customers faster access on Frontier's IP-network with low latency and high network availability.
North American Telephone (NAT), an integrated services provider based in Tampa, Fla., is Frontier's first wholesale dedicated Internet customer. According to President and CEO Curt Barnes, NAT is currently equipping its more than 200 nationwide sales agents with Internet access, and is in a beta test phase with a VoIP product.
"Over the past year, Frontier has shown a tremendous commitment to serve our voice needs," he stated. "By coupling its continued investment in the IP portion of its network and unique Web-enabled back office support systems, Frontier has earned our data business as well."
Added Anthony J. Cassara, president of carrier services for Frontier, "The industry is experiencing tremendous growth in data services. Internet traffic is doubling every 100 days and data revenues are growing at a 40 percent clip," he said. "Given these indicators, more and more carriers are looking to round out their product portfolios and quickly become integrated communications providers, and Frontier is well-positioned to serve their data needs."
Standard features of CarrierConnect include domain name and IP address registration support; proactive, 24x7 network management from Frontier's Network Operations Center; primary and secondary domain name service support; and news feeds.
Connecting more than 120 metropolitan areas around the nation, the Frontier Optronics Network uses the most advanced fiber optics with DWDM. This futureproof design creates "liquid bandwidth," a scalable architecture that gives the network virtually unlimited capacity and positions Frontier to meet customers' applications needs today and well into the future.
