let's differentiate between brokers - first there are brokers who already have online operations. That being the case they have an alternative to FQ and won't buy it IMO - they can subsidize their present offerings if they want to be promotional.

Then there's the brokerage that has no online services. Will they simply sponsor an online quote system or will they want to get into online brokerage transactions as well? If the latter it will take a huge investment (last week The Financial Times of London* cited industry research that indicates it can run up to $3 million to set up a full online financial services website. A portion [unquantified] would cover the cost of the brokerage services including the stock/bond/mutual fund trading). Whatever it cost to set up FlexQuote multiply it by a significant number.

The same article indicated there are about a dozen online brokerages now in existence here in the US. It stated "there is little room in the market for newcomers, and the marketing investment required to carve out a position would be considerable."

So it appears that the possibilities for this marketing plan are limited by the number of firms online already and the barriers to entry for others. I don't believe there is a market for an inde- pendent brokerage to go online for the sole purpose of providing
stock quotes, and a major firm not already online is going to want to put up a site that's at least as good as Schwab's. On that score I'm sorry to say that FlexQuote is not in contention. Just my opinion of course but if you think about it you might end up agreeing.
