"but I don't like the sound of "flat or declining" they felt obliged to announce."

Boilerplate language. They used nearly identical language in last quarter's earnings reports, and the quarter before, and so on. I'm amazed that people continue to believe that the standard template in these earnings release reports mean anything. INTC's earnings release was nothing but good news. Both INTC and MSFT use that language to manage expectations. Compaq is decrying the end of the world and claiming widespread industry problems to excuse their poor showing, yet Intel beats analyst expectations, but throws in it's standard "flat" CYA phrasing and suddenly everyone has the jitters. Stock is down in afterhours trading, the experienced investors on this board who should know better are paranoid, come on guys! Break out the tequila and buy!
