Home-schooled kids have one inestimable advantage - they get such a personalized curriculum that they can have their cake (nail the basics) and eat it too (pursue creative "tangential" interests).

I'm not saying that creativity should be suppressed. Don't imply that I say so; you oughtta know me better than that by now. But the teaching of the basics must never suffer!
A more typical situation obtains when a teacher has 25 students or more, with widely varying levels of interest and comprehension. Never mind home schooling. How would you address this situation?
