M": I have been hearing this all day and all weekend, in one form or another - "Intel has just taken away his (5fer's) defense". Why?

5fer said revenues from sales were down only 5%. Units sales look like they were very high, especially in March. 5fer did not say PC's were not selling he said they were not selling at a high enough price to reach profit expectations. The competition was price cutting and so was he. White boxes were selling like hot cakes.

Intel benefits from this, it does not care what price the boxmakers get. Boxmakers can sell at cost or below cost for all they care. Same for MSFT. Those two prosper by the number of units sold not the price of the units.
