Russett : I don't know much but I did read something in the local rag about the government wanting to revalue uncut stones, for tax purposes, which were being exported. Apparently, the previous assessment guys were all/mainly DeBeers people who grossly undervalued the stones thereby denying the SA government a considerable amount of tax. Marsfontein, a mine in which DeBeers has an interest, is a very complicated and mysterious situation. Randgold also has a smelly finger in the pie. Check out some of these articles

I don't believe the government is doing anything irregular eg Marxist tricks or pre-election stuff. Irregular stuff looks like it was the doings of the boys who were involved.
