nihil--- I run the risk of being off the mark--- having not been involved in the last 3000000 posts, but it occurs to me that you teach college age, which is a far cry from young ones who need a firm foundation. (see how those hymns come in handy)
I think the whole exercise of letting children write what they want without knowing the grammatical boundaries and structure of their language is ludicrous! And that's a very strong theory in the schools right now--- let them "express" themselves---THEN work on the grammar.
BAckwards, backwards. Until you know the rules, you can't intelligently break them or stretch them.
Math? Ammo scores 99th percentile in concepts and drops 40 points in computation because no one FORCED him to learn the damn basic facts by rote when he should have.
A good teacher would have been thrilled with your son's interest and his ability to share that curiosity. After the work of the day was accomplished what a wonderful opportunity to enrich those children's education and she threw it away! THat has nothing to do with learning. She was a crappy teacher.
I have had students (piano) who really resented my refusal to let them play "their" way. I don't believe that they will ever reach their potential without learning others' time-proven ways first.
I bet you and LLR are on the same wave length really. Creativity cannot be fully realized without a strong grasp of the underlying fundamentals. I'm not an historian at all, but didn't many of the great artists apprentice in guilds before striking out on their own?
