Michael,

Short term trading is shuffling money from one investor to the other,
the company earnings are not involved other than as a source of information. The sum of all investors gains and losses for one day is close to zero. There is a term in gaming theory for this: "zero-sum games". To me, short term trading IS a game where we all try to outsmart each other. That's part of the excitement and part of the game and we all know the rules.

Long term investing is based on company revenues and the zero-sum fluctuations are averaged out over time. This type of investment is based on future company performance and demands that the information for the investment is true or at least not purposefully distorted. The conclusions to be drawn from these facts are up to to the investor.
