Good point Matt. I'm a network systems engineer with a fair amount of A/V background. I worked for a high-end audio firm as a technician while going through college and the field is still a hobby for me.
My current home project that I just completed was the integration of my digital dolby 5.1 home theater system with a networked PC..to create an audio/video server if you will. I used one of those nice looking black anodized server enclosures...looks just like another piece of stero equipment sitting next to my A/V receiver in my entertainment center. My large screen TV functions as the monitor and an IR keyboard/trackball is used for control. Its capable of playing DVD's, CD's, TV tuning, video frame capture/recording, web surfing on the TV, and of course holds my entire CD collection in MP3 format (at 160kbps). All audio is routed through the receiver and video direct to the TV (multiple s-video inputs). Additionally it functions as the gateway/proxy/firewall for my home network (cable modem input). My speakers are made by Polk Audio (a fairly high quality product). The sound quality of MP3 is very good and I have difficulty in telling the difference between MP3 and CD audio..my wife actually thought the MP3's sounded better!!! The arguments regarding sound quality are similar to what I've heard regarding reel to reel over CD. The fact is 99% of the people out there can not tell the difference and you'd have to have a $20,000 system to take advantage of that difference in the first place. So if 99% of the people can't tell the difference or don't have the equipment to take advantage of it, is there really a difference? Its obvious that there are some entities that would like to make an issue of it in order to quell what IMO is a growing revolution in digital audio which will have far reaching implications not only for the recording industry but the audio equipment industry as well.
