On land, the first thing you do with a drill rig is anchor the rig down to bedrock if you can.. This is done by burning a few rods into the bedrock and then tightening up some chains from the pipe to the rig in two or three different places. That way the rig does not move up or down or sideways when you drill. Then you put the casing down into the bedrock to guide the drill rods. On Ice, you anchor as well, but the difficulty comes with the open water between the ice and the bottom of the lake. If it is too deep, you may just put the casing into the ice and not try to reach the bottom of the lake. If that is the case, it would be difficult to drill angel holes without having the rods bend to rad shit. This is what I surmize, however, I have not touched a diamond drill for many years, and the technology may have changed. I donot work and get my hands dirty anymore, except unless I don't clean my keyboard.
