AT&T must increase its @Home Network subscribership as much as tenfold over the next 13 months or risk losing part of its stake in the jointly run high-speed Net access company to Cox Communications. The task seems daunting for AT&T, which currently has about 29,000 subscribers, according to broadband market research firm Kinetic Strategies. Sources said AT&T's numbers may be twice that, however, and that AT&T has increased its @Home installations to 2,000 customers per week, on par with @Home's best-performing cable partners.
Jing- Let's hope TCI will now proceed full speed ahead. They will have to do better than 2,000 a week in order to reach 277,000 by May 31, 2000. My math says at that pace, they will greatly fall short. I come up with a number in 2000 of 116,000 additional subscribers which brings the number to around 145,000 in May of 2000.
A couple of weeks ago, a TCI rep. told me that TCI alone had 50,000 subscribers. I guess I don't put much credence in the 29,000 number. I would tend to agree with the number being almost twice that now, which would boost future figures.
I received a letter from TCI yesterday. They said @Home is not available in my area. First they said they were in my city, but not neighborhood. Next they said they were across the river and not in my city. One important note, the letter stated that they will not release publicly their deployment schedule at this time. Their reason was because of "competitive considerations." It looks like I will be waiting a long time for service.
