Paul,

Short interest is certainly a variable which one wants to look at. The combination among high momentum stocks of small floats and large short positions makes for the potential of unusually large point movements.

We have been seeing a lot of this with the internet stocks. It is
reaching levels I have never seen before.

The annual returns for this approach (high momentum plus high short) have been much higher than for momentum stocks without a high short requirement. But the short type stocks are of higher risk & volatility.

So far, it was worth it, but it can't go on forever.
