Ampex Data Systems and Hewlett-Packard Team Up to Provide High-Performance Video Server Archives for the Broadcast Industry

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 14, 1999--Ampex Data Systems Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ampex Corporation (Amex:AXC), and Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HWP) have collaborated to design a fully integrated video server archive.

Driven by customer demand, Ampex Data Systems optimized its DST(R) automated cartridge libraries for Hewlett-Packard's industry-leading MPEG-based MediaStream(TM) video servers to provide a complete video archive solution. The new rigorously tested video server archives are available now.

Broadcasters projecting the need or making the transition to video server-based playback must consider the archive requirements for near-line storage of a facility's interstitial as well as short and long format programming. Ampex and Hewlett-Packard integrated products to create a state-of-the-art video server archive environment. Ampex designed a unique device driver that provides an interface link to the HP MediaStream video server.

Ampex DST automated cartridge libraries are high-performance, reliable digital archives with unlimited expansion capabilities to accommodate a facility's growing video storage requirements. The DST library reduces the overall time required to archive and restore program elements to a network of Hewlett-Packard MediaStream video servers. For the large number of broadcast and video houses currently using Hewlett-Packard MediaStream video servers, Ampex is the answer to the need for a compatible near-line archive to achieve complete automation.

"The integration process not only simplifies a company's move to complete automation with a plug-and-play system, it provides Hewlett-Packard MediaStream users a proven high-performance video server archive solution," stated Greg Hoberg, general manager for HP's video communications division.

"Broadcasters transitioning to server-based video storage and play-out systems are demanding fully integrated and tested systems," said K. Michael Cooper, president of Ampex Data Systems. "Working closely with Hewlett-Packard's product development group, Ampex engineers designed a bullet-proof interface to provide a highly reliable archive solution that functions as one seamless system," Cooper continued.

Ampex DST Product Line

Ideal for the archiving and retrieval of video and images in broadcast and video environments, Ampex DST automated cartridge libraries offer unlimited storage capacities combined with optimum speed, performance and reliability. The company's innovative and patented technologies reduce the cost of storage to pennies per megabyte, simplify media management and lower overhead by reducing the need to track and house large numbers of cartridges.
