In my case, the cable guys wanted to do the installation themselves, and charge a service fee accordingly. I know how to split cable myself but apparently they don't trust us.

My local DSL service sent me the whole startup package for self installation for a minimal fee (including the ethernet card). Cable is faster top end - but if enough people subscribe to it in my area it would slow down vs DSL.
