MMX is not solely graphics focused. The x86 instruction set expansion
will also encompass certain sound functions. But clearly graohics will
be the most important functional area. However note that for PenPro
machines, the Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) could be at least as
important. Furthermore it is not correct that x86 cloners are adopting
MMX as specified by Intel. CYRX announced yesterday that its "MMX"
extensions to the 6x86 will be independent of Intel's implementation.
Consequently there will be at least 4 new graphics acceleration
methods that will hit the market in the late-'96 to early-'97 time horizon.
Namely, Direct3D API (Microsoft), MMX (Intel), AGP (Intel), and MMX
(Cyrix). For each to be utilized software will need to be written to take
advantage of the new instruction sets. This will take some time.

As far as MMX implementation, I don't think it will be headed to the low
end in a "MMX Pentium w/o graphics accelerator" box. Such a design
would require a unified memory achitecture (UMA) motherboard. Such
designs have generally been discredited because they cripple the L1
and L2 cache. Also note the inconsistency of marketing a low end
computer with Intel's highest end Pentium .chip (MMX is expected to
debut in a 200Mhz version). More likely is that MMX is slated to enable
high end Pentiums to easily handle full-screen video/video teleconferencing
without additional hardware.
