In my personal (slightly Linux-biased) opinion, I don't think that Linux will be able to touch MSFT on the desktop, at least not yet. Look for them to become strong in the server area, however. Linux has a _long_ way to go before it is ready for mainstream, contrary to a lot of publications that I read say. My Linux install has taken me over a month to get working, and if it weren't for the help of many a guru and newsgroups, I would have a long ways to go still! Nonetheless, as an example of its server capabilities, I got the web server (apache over a dynamic IP modem line [http://calpoly.tzo.com ]), sendmail server (for sending / receiving local mail), and an ftp server up within a weekend (even before my printer, soundcard, or video card were correctly configured). JMO....
