Thanks for the follow-up on Xing, Mark. Here's more:

I'm pursuing the issue of MP3 encoding quality with some propeller heads who know where the skeletons are buried. Not questioning your Xing friend's sincerity but you should be aware there's serious disagreement on this subject. To oversimplify, the issue comes down to whether, in optimizing for file conversion *speed* (which some would say isn't even all that important), Xing's variable bitrate compromises resolution *quality*.

Xing is the unquestioned file conversion speed demon, but techies and purists seem to favor file conversion algorithms that follow more closely the Fraunhoffer MP3 specification.

For the record, MP3 (MPEG Audio Layer-3) was developed by Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, München, Germany. Fraunhofer IIS is perhaps the world's leading research laboratory in the area of audio coding. MP3 comes out of work undertaken by Fraunhofer beginning in 1987, in conjunction with Deiter Seitzer, a professor at the University of Erlangen.
