I am sure if I am going to go back permanently and what, if anything, I am going to do if I do go back. :-) I have seen too many folks bogged down by detailed plans. S/W jobs, indeed, abound in India and pay extremely well in a relative scale compared to USA.
As for the novels about India, I would first recommend the works of V. S. Naipaul, which, while not set in the backdrop of India portrays the Indian middle class psyche to an amazing degree of accuracy IMO. For example, A House for Mr. Biswas, IMHO, is a masterpiece deserving of the Noble. Also, A Fine Balance by Rohintan Mistry and Shadowlines by Amitabha Ghosh are good. Unfortunately, the best Indian novels are seldom translated into English. Otherwise, I would have recommended the novel Song of The Road by Bubhuti Bhushan Banerjee. In lieu of an English translation, I would recommend the movie trilogy made by the most noted late 20th century Indian director, Satyajit Ray, based on the novel. For a view of life in a 70's Indian city I would recommend the movie The Middleman by the same director.
These, of course, are strictly personal choices.
