Sort of like Ivan Karamazov refusing his ticket to heaven?
Well, if it were placed in such explicit terms I might consider reconsidering, but somehow I doubt that it will be.
Actually, you are quite right, Steve...
That's a relief. Not a great deal of thought went into that post, and I worried that I'd left some monumental logical gap for everyone to pounce on.
The bottom line, really, is that I don't believe a word of it, and never did. I ceased to be a Christian during the Catechism class in which the topic of original sin was introduced. My parents were reasonably devout at the time, but they also took their academic lives very seriously, and they had made the error (from a religious perspective) of introducing me to sequential thought. The thought of a God who would condemn one person for the action of another struck me, as a child, with a deep horror (not unrelated to the presence in my life of an older sister skilled at diverting blame), and I never took the edifice seriously after that. |
