Given the explosive growth in Inter/Intra networking it would not be surprizing to have seen Novell crush estimates on the upside. More importantly, there has never been a greater sense of urgency for the company to achieve strong results and appear healthy, wealthy and wise. Those two forces should have gelled into jaw-dropping results: massive demand, sense of urgency on the part of the company to do well.

Of course, what happened was nobody wanted Novell's products and, barring a remake of the Flintstones, it's not clear where these products fit in. As for the company's sense of urgency, there is well over a billion dollars to keep those fat paychecks rolling along with trips to Australia or where ever. If they could just squash those pesky shareholders they could quietly spend away and simply move on to greener pastures when the money runs out.
