New York, April 15 (Bloomberg) -- Compaq Computer Corp.'s AltaVista Internet search service is inviting advertisers to pay to be listed at the top of its search results, the New York Times said. Doubleclick Inc., which is selling advertising for AltaVista, sent an e-mail recently to customers, saying it's auctioning off the right to be listed in the first two keyword search positions. The offering, first reported by Wired News, is contrary to the practice of major search services, though AltaVista said it plans to separate advertiser listings so that users do not mistake them for regular search results, the New York Times reported.
