El -
I have had a few thoughts - in fact just commented on this in a PM, some of which I will include here.

In discussions with current CPQ employees, one person told me that DEC people are still on their old payroll and benefits programs and have not been integrated with the CPQ workforce yet. Another told me that many of the sales accounting and tracking systems are not integrated, which results in double counting and missed counting when some corporate rollups are done. This requires a lot of manual effort by the financial teams and is one of the reasons that the "real time" picture of how the company is doing has been distorted. This may have contributed to the recent debacle - it seems possible that Mason really did not know the real numbers. It is also possible that they don't know them even now. This was the main reason that earnings announcements are 3 weeks after the quarter closing instead of the previous 2 weeks - it takes them that long to get the numbers and cross-check between two different systems.
