<In the popular press, the K7 has gotten great reviews and everyone's looking forward to it with high hopes and great anticipation.

In the popular press, the attitude towards Merced seems to be: "We'll have to wait for McKinley to get anything useful out of IA64.">

Perhaps you forgot about all those companies dedicated toward building Merced systems. You're lucky Paul isn't on this thread at the time, or else he'd be more than happy to show you himself.

The big problem with Merced, however, isn't going to be its performance. It's going to be software. By the time McKinley is released, software support should be more mature.

Of course, the K7 doesn't have this problem. Neither does Willamette and Foster and their follow-ons.

Of course, we'll know soon enough whether the K7 can live up to the "foils." Already, a few are speculating that the K7 bus won't be able to make it to 200 MHz in its first incarnation. That's a minor point, though, but one that could be indicative of the hype-to-reality ratio of the foils.
