Sun Microsystems and Premiere Technologies' Orchestrate.com Enter Into Strategic Relationship to Promote Unified Messaging Business Wire - April 13, 1999 14:54 Jump to first matched term
PALO ALTO, Calif. and ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 13, 1999--
First Multi-Million Dollar Deal for Sun-Netscape Software Features Premiere's Next Generation Orchestrate(R) Unified Messaging Service and Sun's Solaris Servers
Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW) and Premiere Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:PTEK) today announced a strategic relationship to promote unified messaging services and Web-based communications. Unified messaging, estimated by Ovum Research to be a $31 billion business by 2006, allows consumers and businesses to manage all of their communications and retrieve all of their messages - voice mail, e-mail and fax mail - using the tool of their choice: computer or telephone. Premiere's Orchestrate.com(R) unified messaging services will now be powered by software that will be part of the Sun-Netscape alliance - including e-commerce infrastructure and messaging application software - as part of Network Premiere. Orchestrate.com will also rely on Sun hardware solutions and professional services.
Scott McNealy, chairman and CEO of Sun Microsystems, said, "With the demand for unified messaging services growing so significantly and the leverage provided by Premiere Technologies' large installed base of customers, Premiere has the potential to become a leading supplier of Web-based communications technology. We're excited about how this deal shows the continued commitment of customers to the products and services that will be part of the alliance, and to be part of Premiere's expanding market opportunity."
Boland T. Jones, Premiere's chairman and CEO, said, "We intend to transform Premiere, under the Orchestrate.com brand, into the leading Web-based communications company. By working with industry leaders such as Sun to jointly market unified messaging solutions, we can begin to drive network-based standards for Web communications and can reinforce and grow Premiere's position in the market."
The new Sun-Premiere strategic relationship announced today makes Premiere a member of the Sun Developer Connection Program. Premiere will become a key independent software vendor (ISV) offering. Sun and Premiere have also agreed to collaboratively market unified messaging services under a joint marketing arrangement.
Premiere's Orchestrate.com unified messaging technology creates a "universal in-box," allowing users to read and respond to all of their messages using a single tool of their choice - computer or telephone. The next generation Orchestrate is scheduled to initially be rolled out to the hundreds of thousands of Premiere's existing voice mail and mobile business customers.
The software that Premiere is purchasing will be part of the Sun-Netscape Alliance product portfolio. America Online, Inc. and Sun Microsystems formed the Sun-Netscape Alliance to provide easy-to-deploy, comprehensive enterprise and e-commerce solutions to business partners and other companies competing in today's Net Economy.
