OK, so I've uncovered a bit of info on competing products. DuPont Pharma markets a hetastarch in sodium chloride solution. Gensia produces a competing product which is marketed by Baxter Int'l. Gensia got its ANDA for that 11/16/98. So the marketing effort is just beginning. A search of Baxter's product website failed to turn it up; I've emailed for info and we'll see what comes up.

Apparently DuPont's got the other half of the market ABT does not. Gensia/Baxter are coming in with a knock-off. ABT is responding with improved product from BTIM. Gensia's 11/16/98 press release estimates the market size to be $29 million.

My impression overall is that BTIM is very much in the fray, but it's hard to figure how big the battlefield is. Given the effect on BTIM's stock price of even a moderate victory on a medium-sized battlefield (say, $150 million), it looks pretty good at these prices.

It really does come down to whose market research you believe. It would be nice to find an independent professional organiztaion that could supply an unbiased figure, but I don't know if such exists.
Anyone with additional info/opinion is invited to join in here.

Cheers, Tuck
