A friend of mine is a nurse practitioner - diagnosing, prescribing and generally getting involved in the routine side of medicine. I ran the medical/biotech part of my pf past her last night for impressions.

I asked about H. pylori, and the response was interesting. In the UK at least, Astra Pharmaceuticals are giving away the tests (immediate result pin-prick) to doctors, in order to raise awareness and promote their treatment. The rep gave her a few kits and asked her to just call if she wanted any more. She doesn't know who provides the kits for Astra, or if they make them themselves.

This seems similar to the Quidel/P&G arrangement. What I don't understand is how Quidel makes money by giving away the kit, unless I've misunderstood how it works with P&G.

The positive side to all this is that diagnostics co.s could do very well; majors buying their kits and giving them away as loss leaders to promote their profitable treatments.

FWIW, she was concerned about the ethical complications on Aids testing, cf. Trinity Biotech, excited about the potential of Pennsaid arthritis treatment from Dimethaid and Macrochem's impotence treatment. I own these three, still not Quidel.
Patrick.
