But probably not nearly as much as maintaining an upscale retail space, staff, covering off shop lifting, etc. Besides, do you think companies like Eatons, the Bay, etc. spend any less in a year on art work for their weekly fliers than it would take to publish a semi-annual catalogue?

Business in general has wisened up to the fact that to communicate in a cost effective manner they have to target their message as tightly as possible to their prime prospects.. direct mail, catalogue sales and yes... the internet are all ways to facilitate this. The days of mass marketing to the general public are long gone... at least for the more astute/big consumer product firms. The level of demographic information being used by many companies to build strategies at the local level (ie. neighbourhood) would probably scare a lot of people.

These same companies are now looking at ways to get their products directly to their consumers... I think in the future (ie. maybe 10 years from now) a significant number of consumer packaged goods firms (Kraft/General Foods, P&G, etc.) will be offering their products directly to the consumer via the internet.

As an aside... The big stumbling block will be distribution however.. which will likely present a lot of new opportunities down the road. Still, you can't sell someone a box of K-dinner for $.79 and charge $5.00 to deliver it. We should all keep our eyes out for companies setting up to do this though... might be a big opp if you get in on the ground floor.

BTW: I've worked in marketing for many years and this is one thing that I do in fact know something about.
