Patrick, Re Qdel's agreement w/ P+G,Qdel will spend about $200,000 this quarter to give P+G sales reps a two tests HP kit for distribution to drs when the P+G salesforce visits the drs to promote P+G's Helidac treatment. Qdel will obviously not make any money directly from the P+G agreement itself since these are free sample from Quidel without cost to either the drs or P+G. Qdel is trying (wisely in my opinion) to get their test known by drs through one of the best and most aggressive sales forces around- P+G. Any orders placed for Qdel tests will go through normal channels- ie QDEL's regular distributors. Qdel has the only CLIA waived HP test in the US, allowing it to sell the tests to a whole bunch of drs (approx 25,000, I think) who cannot by law perform any other HP tests(because no other company has a CLIA waived HP test)- Although there are some upfront costs for QDEL- I think this program is much better "advertising" than anything else imaginable. P+G has 300 + salesforce and they will be visiting approx 43,000 drs offices and clinics in the months ahead, promoting Qdel's HP test in everyone of the offices at the same time they are promoting their own Helidac treatment - Results are expected from this promotion in the first quarter beginning 4-1-97.
