Oh, no, of course not! They'd never do that, would they?? ;-) Or at least never admit to it. But all companies do it to some extent. It can be more subtle than actual price discounting, for example adding extra or extended support, or assigning a really good tech to help with support questions, etc. All this contributes to sales being higher in the last quarter of the month than the first quarter.

I have no actual knowledge of the Wind River situation, but I have bought numerous expensive high tech toys, and that is just the way it goes. Unless the company has a product they can't manufacture enough of, the price of the total package (including support, etc) will fluctuate due to the company's overall sales in a quarter. This is especially true in a competitive marketplace where you can play one company off of another.

The fault goes to investors who look only at the latest quarter to evaluate a company's potential. Companies with strong management who don't do much discounting and are more willing to incur the wrath of Wall Street for a short quarter are IMHO better off than those who do discount to make a quarter.

The only way we can know for sure of the situation at Wind River is to have some large buyers post their observations, but that seems unlikely. You don't want to spread the word if you received a great deal, because then you'll never get it again.

Sorry to go on and on about this minor point.
