<Backward compatibility is a function of the standard's envelope rather than the mode of operation. The single standard supports three modes: Direct Sequence, Multi-Carrier and TDD. Each mode allows for differing frequency allocation and the utilization of existing spectrum BUT ALL MODES WILL BE SUPPORTED BY BOTH ANSI-41 AND GSM-MAP NETWORKS (that's a very key point)> -- My apologies, but I have been trying to understand this debate and at this point I get lost -- I guess due to inadequate technical background. I thought that one "mode" was, say WCDMA -- and from that perspective (if so), how, technically, will WCMDA be backward-compatible with IS-95? Also, I note that on another post you say that ERICY will (other than the small discount due to their proportionate patent portfolio) be paying the same royalty rate as the Koreans -- where has it been directly stated that ERICY's royalty rate will be (absent that discount) the same as the Korean rate? Again, my apologies if I am coming at this with gaps in knowledge, but I'm trying to understand it and I do appreciate the information and insights that you have provided. And if you can direct me to other sources that will further explain the matter, many thanks. -- idler.
