Chuzz, my turn to take strong exception.

Let us say that Ockham's Razor works best in situations where you are looking for a single cause, or a single explanation. It works less well in situations where you anticipate many causes, and multiple explanations. Or: it works best in situations where you need/must employ strict scientific method. It works less well -- or not at all -- in situations that demand a different sort of understanding or approach.

Would you employ Ockham's Razor in literary criticism, for example?

1) You would if you were trying to determine authorship of a particular document.

2) You would not if you were trying to demonstrate the (presumably many) literary merits of the document.
