Brian - you have every right to do what you want. Even ramble about communism on Nokia thread, no matter how irrelevant and deeply offending that is to those Finnish readers whose relatives died during Winter War. I just hope this thread could avoid being dragged to the same level where most discussion forums are. If we could keep the focus entirely on the companies and avoid comments like "you boast all the time" wouldn't that be fine? I'm not building a cult of personality here - you are the one who keeps shifting the focus on me instead of issues.

Nokia's biggest market for the small amount of vendor financing the company has is USA - that was why I think Nokia's exposure to third world countries is limited. The Chinese GSM deals do not involve vendor financing according to my sources - who are brokers in a couple of Scandinavian investment banks.

Marc - Nokia has about half a dozen phones that receive real-time stock quotes, individualized weather forecasts, hockey game scores, custom ring tunes, etc. Right now these value-added services are mostly available in Europe. That's an operator-related issue - in USA, operators have not previously invested heavily in this stuff. This has to do with a relatively small base of customers with digital phones - last year 80% of American mobile phone subs had analog phones.

However, that situation is changing right now. The GSM operators are anxious to introduce value-added services, since they need some sort of edge over CDMA and TDMA which have better coverage in USA. Nokia's 71xx series has 80% bigger display than the older 61xx series and a scroll button to help with navigation - it has been designed to facilitate the use of data services. This series should arrive in USA late in the third quarter and is postitioned to be the big Christmas item. It's the new wave of smartphones - as small as a regular phone, but with those extra features that underline the importance of data. I think the operators will come around at this point at the very latest.

It was good to see GSM win licenses in Detroit, Dallas and Chicago. We could see some real consolidation among the GSM operators now that the national footprint looks much better. Western Wireless and Omnipoint look like the strongest companies right now. I think Omnipoint has already decided to introduce this stock quote thing for their important New York customer base.
