RESEARCH ALERT - Veritas Software raised

NEW YORK, April 16 (Reuters) - Credit Suisse First Boston said Friday analyst Wendell Laidley upgraded Veritas Software Corp. to strong buy from buy.

-- Veritas on Thursday reported first quarter net income of $13.6 million or $0.26 per diluted share, up from $9.1 million or $0.18 a share a year ago.

-- In a note, Laidley said Veritas ''continues to generate solid (profit) margin expansion'' and called the company ''one of our most compelling infrastructure software ideas.''

-- Raised 1999 earnings estimate to $1.12 per share from $1.08 and 2000 estimate to $1.58 from $1.42.

-- Shares closed on Thursday at 83-3/8, later climbing to 85 in after-hours trading.
